PERSONALITY CULT: IS IT NECESSARY FOR REVOLUTION?

While referring to the ‘cult of Mao’, Charles Bettelheim (197 observed that it harmed the ‘Revolutionary Line’ in China. He, however, made Lin Piao and Hua Kuo Feng responsible for the cult but did not find fault with Mao. When we asked him about Mao’s responsibility in this matter, Bettelheim wrote to us (on 6 April 1983) as follows: “I don’t think that Mao tried really to prevent the “Cult”. In my opinion, he considered it as a necessity, as a way of assuring the unity of the people in a situation where many disruptive forces were at work.”

This means, while persons like Lin Piao carried on Mao’s Cult for self-consolidation, Mao considered it a revolutionary necessity. This is the reason which every one who defends Cult would say. Mao also said the same thing in his interviews to Edgar Snow: that his cult was necessary. Did he give this reason alone? No. He also gave another reason: that people carried out Personality Cult on a large scale since they were culturally backward. Before we discuss whether this Personality Cult is necessary for revolution and whether people carried it out or revolutionaries resorted to it, it is necessary to know what sort of activities were undertaken for this Cult.

1. Whenever one talks or writes about Mao, ‘Four Greats’ must be added to Mao’s name. (1) Great Teacher. (2) Great Leader. (3) Great Supreme Commander. (4) Great Helmsmen. It was Mao himself who told Edgar Snow that these adjectives were used with reference to him. Mao was eligible to greater adjectives than these for his contribution to Chinese revolution. But, should people add all these adjectives to his name? Should they describe him in this manner? If they want to tell that ‘the Central Committee has passed a resolution’, they would not tell it so simply. What sort of Central Committee is it? It is under the auspices of the Party. What sort of Party is it? It is led by a great Chairman. What sort of Chairman is he? (1) Great Teacher. (2) Great Leader. (3) Great Supreme Commander. (4) Great Helmsmen. Hence, in order to tell that the Central Committee has passed a resolution, they would say, ‘The Central Committee of the Party –led by our Great Teacher, Great Leader, Great Supreme Commander and Great Helmsmen Chairman Mao – has passed a resolution.’ Whether they talk of the Party, the Central Committee or Leadership and whenever they mention Mao’s name, all these adjectives must be present one after the other like bogies of a train. After describing like this, if Mao’s name has to be mentioned again, the whole thing is repeated. We find hundreds and thousands of sentences in books and newspapers of China (also in our revolutionary papers). [What is the difference between these adjectives and descriptions like ‘Rajadhi Raja! (Oh, King of Kings’!), Raja Marthanda! (As brilliant as the Sun!) Do you say that all the attributes of the king are false and Mao’s are true? But, we don’t find all such true attributes in Mao’s Cult. Even if they are true, isn’t there any unnaturalness in the way in which they were expressed?] …………………….

Save Life of Govindan Kutty

 Govindan Kutty is on the 8th Day of Hunger Fast

On December 19th the Kerala Police, under the orders of Ernakulum Police Commissioner, raided the room of Com. Govindan Kutty; confiscated all his literature and Hard disk and arrested him under a number of fake cases. He was harassed and interrogated for a day and and then sent to judicial custody. Since then he has been on a hunger strike which has entered the 8th day demanding his unconditional release. Given his age his life is in serious threat.

People’s March is an independent revolutionary paper. It supports all revolutionary movements including the Maoist movements in India, Nepal and elsewhere. It is a fully legal publication registered by the Government of India with the RNI number KER ENG/2000/2051 and the postal registration number: KL/EKM/614/2007-09. Th magazine has been coming out for over 7 years meeting all the requirements of the government.

The arrest of the editor and the foisting of fake charges against him are nothing but an attempt of the GOI of India to further stiffle freedom of speech in the country. The so-called largest democracy in the world with a gigantic army, para-military and police force feels threatend by a mere monthly mgazine with a limited cirulation of a few thousands. It dispays the fascist character of the governemnet and the cowardly action of the Keralam police.

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Com Govindan Kutty and allow the continued publication of People’s March. We hold the governmnet entirely responsible in the face of any damage to his health or threat to his life due to huger strike within jail.

बिनायक सेन की कैद के मायने

इसी महीने 10 दिसंबर को एक तरफ अंतरराष्ट्रीय मानवाधिकार दिवस मनाया जा रहा था तो दूसरी तरफ नागरिक अधिकारों के लिए लड़ने वाले एक शख्स की कैद लंबी हो रही थी. ये शख्स हैं इस साल मई से छत्तीसगढ़ की रायपुर जेल में बंद पीयूसीएल नेता डॉ. बिनायक सेन जिन्हें उच्चतम न्यायालय ने जमानत देने से इनकार कर दिया. 45 मिनट चली सुनवाई वहां मौजूद लोगों के लिए एक भयावह अनुभव था. अभियोजन पक्ष का दावा था कि सेन माओवादी हैं और उन्हें छोड़ने का मतलब होगा सरकार की जड़ें खोदने के लिए उन्हें खुली आजादी देना. परेशान करने वाली बात ये थी कि इस दावे की प्रामाणिकता जांचने की जरूरत ही नहीं समझी गई. डॉ सेन के कंप्यूटर रिकॉर्डों को तोड़मरोड़ कर पेश करते हुए सरकारी वकील ने अदालत को बताया कि इसमें वे पत्र हैं जिनसे ये पता लगता है कि किस तरह डॉ सेन ने नागपुर में हथियारों का प्रशिक्षण कैंप आयोजित

क्या फैसला सुनाने वाली खंडपीठ ने ये महसूस किया कि डॉ सेन के एक भी दिन जेल में रहने का मतलब है, छत्तीसगढ़ के धमतारी जिले में रहने वाले आदिवासियों के लिए मुसीबत और पीड़ा?

करने में मदद पहुंचाई. बचाव पक्ष के वकील राजीव धवन ने इस ओर ध्यान खींचने की कोशिश की कि पत्रों को तोड़मरोड़ कर पेश किया जा रहा है और डॉ सेन खैरलांजी में एक दलित परिवार की हत्या से जुड़े तथ्यों की पड़ताल के लिए नागपुर गए थे. लेकिन अदालत का मानना था कि धवन का तर्क ट्रायल कोर्ट में देखेगा और उसके पास डॉ सेन को जमानत न देने के पर्याप्त कारण मौजूद हैं.

इससे भी ज्यादा परेशान करने वाली बात थी हमारे कुछ अनुभवी मित्रों का यह कहना कि अभियोजन पक्ष का काम ही है कि वह झूठ बोले और इसमें कुछ भी नया या अनोखा नहीं है कि सरकारी वकील ने डॉ सेन के बारे में तथ्यों को तोड़मरोड़ कर पेश किया.

जब सरकार ही झूठ बोलने पर उतर आए तो आप क्या करेंगे? क्या देश के उच्चतम न्यायालय ने ये सिद्धांत नहीं दिया है कि किसी भी व्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता सर्वोपरि है और जमानत से तब तक इनकार नहीं किया जाना चाहिए जब तक ये स्वतंत्रता दूसरों के लिए खतरा न बन जाए? क्या फैसला सुनाने वाली खंडपीठ ने ये महसूस किया कि डॉ सेन के एक भी दिन जेल में रहने का मतलब है, छत्तीसगढ़ के धमतारी जिले में रहने वाले आदिवासियों के लिए मुसीबत और पीड़ा? वो आदिवासी जिनके लिए डॉ सेन ही एकमात्र मेडिकल सुविधा थे. क्या खंडपीठ ने ये सोचा कि डॉ सेन की गिरफ्तारी के फलस्वरूप धमतारी अस्पताल बंद हो गया है? और इसके साथ ही पढ़ने में आता है अदालत ने किसी फिल्म स्टार को सिर्फ इसलिए जमानत दे दी कि उसके ऊपर फिल्म उद्योग के करोड़ों रुपये लगे हुए हैं.

आम आदमी सीधे सवाल पूछता है : क्या जमानत दिए जाने पर डॉ सेन के भूमिगत होने का खतरा था? ये एक तथ्य है कि बंगाल में अपनी छुट्टियां बिताने के बाद डॉ सेन मई में रायपुर लौटे थे, ये पता होने के बावजूद कि स्थानीय मीडिया के सहयोग से छत्तीसगढ पुलिस उनके बारे में दुष्प्रचार कर रही है. उनके भाई ने उन्हें एक पत्र भी भेजा था जिसमें आशंका व्यक्त की गई थी कि लौटने पर उन्हें गिरफ्तार किया जा सकता है. लेकिन वह वापस आए और जैसी कि आशंका थी उन्हें गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया. अगर छत्तीसगढ़ पुलिस अदालत को जैसा बता रही थी वैसा होता तो डॉ सेन मई में ही भूमिगत हो जाते. उनका वापस आने और कानून का सामना करने का फैसला पर्याप्त आधार होना चाहिए था कि कोई भी अदालत उन्हें जमानत दे देती. केस की जानकारी रखने वालों के मुताबिक सरकार द्वारा ट्रायल कोर्ट में मामले को लटकाए रखने के लिए अपनाई गई चालबाजियां

छत्तीसगढ़ की सरकार के लिए यह जरूरी है कि वह हर उस आवाज को खामोश कर दे जो पूंजीपतियों से उसके गठजोड़ को रोशनी में लाती हो. वह गठजोड़ जो गरीबों के संसाधनों को लूटने के लिए बना है.

इस बात का सबूत हैं कि सरकार की दिलचस्पी केवल डॉ सेन को लंबे समय तक कैद रखने में है. इसका नतीजा ये हुआ कि सलवा जुडूम के नाम पर हो रहे सरकारी अत्याचारों का पर्दाफाश करने वाली एक ताकतवर और भरोसेमंद जुबान खामोश हो गई है. इसका मतलब ये भी है कि मानवाधिकारों के लिए आवाज उठाने वाले समुदाय के सारे संसाधन अब अपने नेता को आजादी दिलाने में लग जाएंगे. नतीजतन सरकार को निर्बाध दूसरी ज्यादतियां करने की छूट मिल जाएगी.

छत्तीसगढ़ की सरकार के लिए यह जरूरी है कि वह हर उस आवाज को खामोश कर दे जो पूंजीपतियों से उसके गठजोड़ को रोशनी में लाती हो. वह गठजोड़ जो गरीबों के संसाधनों को लूटने के लिए बना है. जब डॉ सेन ने छत्तीसगढ़ सरकार की जनविरोधी प्रकृति का भांडाफोड़ करना शुरू किया, जब उन्होंने सलवा जुडूम और एनकाउंटर के नाम पर होने वाले अत्याचार के खिलाफ आवाज उठानी शुरू की तो सरकार उसे बर्दाश्त न कर सकी. उसने डॉ सेन की जुबान बंद करने का फैसला कर लिया. सबसे आसान तरीका था उन्हें माओवादी घोषित कर देना.

डॉ सेन कितने दिन जेल में रहेंगे कहा नहीं जा सकता. जो निश्चित रूप से कहा जा सकता है वह ये है कि डॉ बिनायक सेन जैसे लोगों के जेल में बिताये गये हर दिन का मतलब है भारत में लोकतंत्र और आजादी के एक दिन का कम हो जाना. हमें ये जानने की आवश्यकता है कि छत्तीसगढ़ की जेलें डॉ सेन जैसे सैकड़ों लोगों से भरी हैं. ऐसे कई सीपीआई कार्यकर्ता हैं जिन्हें सिर्फ इस अपराध में माओवादी करार देकर जेल में ठूंस दिया गया कि उन्होंने सलवा जुडूम का विरोध किया था. माओवादियों की हिंसावादी राजनीति का समर्थन नहीं किया जा सकता लेकिन जब राज्य में किसी भी विपक्ष को माओवादी बता जेल में ठूंसा जाने लगे तो ऐसा उनकी राजनीति को निश्चित तौर पर थोड़ी सी वैधता प्रदान करता है. क्या सरकार ऐसा जानबूझकर कर रही है?  क्या ये सरकार खुद भारत का अलोकतंत्रीकरण कर रही है?

The Nakba: Ethnic cleansing and the birth of Israel

(In India student activist ask often about any good book on Israel-Pelestine question dealing the history of the dispute also. ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine’ is a book written by Israeli historian and senior lecturer at Haifa University Ilan Pappe. the book deals right from the british invasion of Pelestine.but it may be hard to find it in India.we are posting AWTW review of the book.)

Palestinians call what happened to them in 1948 the Nakba – Arabic for catastrophe. It was perpetrated by Zionist leaders looking to form the state of Israel on Palestinian land without the Palestinians.

During the Nakba almost a million Palestinians (half the population at that time) were brutally forced from their land, villages and homes, fleeing with only the possessions they could carry. Many were raped, tortured and killed. To ensure that there would be nothing for the Palestinians to return to, their villages and even many olive and orange trees were so well razed that few visible remnants remain. When the Nakba ended, there had been 31 documented massacres and probably others. Some 531 villages and 11 urban neighbourhoods were emptied of their inhabitants.

Former Arabic village and road names were Hebrewized. Ancient mosques and Christian churches were destroyed. Theme parks, pine forests (trees not native to the region) and Israeli settlements sit atop many of the old Palestinian villages. All this was to wipe out any physical evidence that the land belonged to Palestinians and give finality to the Nakba.

How many times have you had a discussion about the plight of the Palestinians with supporters of the existence of the Israeli state and met the argument that the problem arose from Palestinian intolerance of Jewish settlers? How many people know – or admit – that from the beginning Zionism had planned to permanently expel the Palestinian people from their land? In many Western countries, Nakba denial is as obligatory as Holocaust denial is condemned. How did this happen?

‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine’ by Israeli historian and senior lecturer at Haifa University Ilan Pappe explores the period of the Nakba (One World Publisher, Oxford, 2006). The premise is that the Nakba was nothing less than an act of ethnic cleansing, normally regarded by international law as a crime against humanity. To support this theory, the author outlines various definitions from different current sources, including “an ethnically mixed area being turned into a pure ethnic space”. He shows how the slaughter and/or forced expulsion of the Armenians in Turkey, the Tutsis in Rwanda and the Croatians and Bosnians in former Yugoslavia is akin to what the Zionists did to the Palestinians on a massive scale in 1948 and are still doing today. Pappe also draws a connection between ethnic cleansing and colonialism as it occurred in North and South America as well as Africa and Australia……..
